The Faculty of Art and Creative Technologies is particularly strong at St George's. Focusing on the individual we encourage our students to produce work that is diverse, ambitious, and above all personal.

The standard of work our students produce throughout the faculty is exceptionally high, which can be seen in our annual end-of-year exhibition, examination results, and impressive record of our students’ progression to some of the most prestigious art, design and technology-based courses at university and college in both the UK and abroad.

Facilities and resources

The Art Department is set in its own building and is a dynamic hub of activity throughout and beyond the school day where students are encouraged to become self-motivated and independent learners.

A brand-new Design and Innovation Suite for Creative Technologies is opening in 2023.

Across the faculty, students have access to printmaking, ceramics/clay, 3D printing, laser-cutting, Virtual Reality Headsets, Resistant Materials Workshop, Computer Aided Design and Desktop Publishing software.

The faculty supports the Arkwright Engineering Scholarship, and in recent years, Textile Design has become a particular strength of the faculty. With an emphasis on learning techniques and experimenting in two and three dimensions, students create imaginative and exciting personal outcomes.

Students have the opportunity to work in a wider range of materials and media: acrylic paint, ceramics, textiles, printmaking, construction materials, etc.

In Design and Technology the emphasis is on skills-based, practical learning. They learn to safely use workshop tools and equipment and are introduced to bench tools.

Students are encouraged to become self-motivated and independent learners. They have access to printmaking, ceramics/clay, IT facilities, and an extensive reference library. Senior students add further skills that bring in digital design to create prototypes. They are introduced to 2D and 3D Computer-Aided Design (CAD), working with the laser cutter and 3D printers, whilst also refining their design skills and practical workshop skills.
