Department of Classics

The Classics department offers courses in Latin, Ancient Greek, Ancient History and Classical Studies.

Lower School Latin

Building on students’ experience of the ancient world through their Primary years, all students begin their formal study of Latin and the Roman World in Lower 4.  We follow the Cambridge Latin course, Book I which introduces the students to the skills of translation, comprehension, and vocabulary recognition, and the culture of the Roman world.  Girls are encouraged to make links with English and other foreign languages and explore parallels with the modern world. The course includes fully interactive online resources which can be accessed from home as well as part of classroom teaching.

Upper School Classics

In Upper School students may continue with Latin as one of their language options. We prepare students for qualifications up to SQA Advanced Higher in Latin and Classical studies.

Ancient Greek is also offered as an after school class, with the option of completing a GCSE short course.

Beyond the Classroom

The department also run a Classics club for Lower School students to explore the myths and legends of the ancient world. Greek club in Upper School gives students a taster of the ancient Greek language and culture.
