Alex Hems: Coronavirus Update March 17 2020

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Coronavirus Update March 17, 2020

You will be aware of the most recent, updated guidance from the UK government, regarding staying at home if you or a member of your family is displaying symptoms consistent with the Coronavirus. The symptoms are a fever and/or a new, persistent cough. If you live with others and you or one of them have symptoms of coronavirus, then all household members must stay at home and not leave the house for 14 days. The 14-day period starts from the day when the first person in the house became ill.  Please follow the link below for more detailed information.

Please can I ask you all to follow this guidance, for the sake of the whole community, especially those who have additional reasons to be concerned, either for their own health or for that of older or vulnerable relatives.

You will understand I am sure, that these new measures may start to have an impact on staff numbers in school, but we will continue to do our best to operate as normally as possible in the circumstances.

You will be aware from my earlier messages of the plans, sent to you via School Post, that we have in place to be able to continue to deliver education to your daughters, in the event of their absence from school, or of the school adopting remote online learning. We have been reiterating these messages for the girls and demonstrating to them how to access links to work from home. We also have plans in place to remain in contact with the girls on a pastoral level during any period of school closure.

We have made the following changes within school:

  • There will be no further school assemblies
  • We are re-scheduling planned visits to the school by prospective families in order to minimise footfall on the school site
  • Given the requirement to ‘lock down’ an entire household if one member starts to display symptoms, I have taken the decision to ask parents of boarders to take their daughters out of Houldsworth as soon as possible.

As soon as I have any information relating to potential changes in arrangements GSCE and SQA examinations, I shall be in contact with you and the girls.

I am grateful to you all for your support and the messages of goodwill that we have received in recent days from the parent body.

With my best wishes to you and your families,

Mrs Alex Hems MA Oxon
Head, St George's School for Girls, Edinburgh
