A letter from the Head, 29 April 2020

Alex HemsDear Parents and Guardians

I realise that you will be following as eagerly as I am the discussions in the media about likely timings and scenarios for a return to school for children in Scotland.  As yet there is no clear position from government on this; they will be weighing all sorts of factors and it is too early to expect a definitive announcement yet.

I wanted you to know, however, that in the meantime we at St George's are planning for a variety of scenarios, depending on what we may be permitted to offer once the decision to allow children back to school is made. Our priorities will of course be the safety of all concerned, pupils and staff, and the delivery of a high standard of education across the school.

Until then, we continue to evolve and develop our supported home learning programme. Your feedback, and the responses from the girls to our regular pastoral questionnaires, are very helpful; thank you all for your support. I am delighted that we have been able to roll out a co-curricular timetable for this term, and that plans are afoot for a number of enjoyable events over the course of this term which will bring the community together in one way or another. I am very proud of the way that the girls in Lower and Upper 4 have risen to the challenge of taking their exams at home, and I am sure that the Lower 5s will follow suit. The teaching staff are working hard to collate and sift evidence in support of our estimated grades for the girls from Upper 5 to Upper 6. Reporting and Parent/Teacher interviews will go ahead as scheduled, albeit in different formats, and key transition events will also run in an on-line forum. Mrs Bryce will be in touch with details of the comprehensive programme that we have in place for Upper 6 students, which will start from 11th May.

Key dates for your diaries are:

Lower 5 - Looking Ahead to Sixth Form: 20th May 5.30pm

Primary 1 Information Evening: 3rd June 6pm

Primary 6 - Looking Ahead to Secondary Education: 4th June 4pm

Lower 6 - Life Long Learning Conference and information event for parents: 8th June 5.30pm

Primary 5 Farewell 16th June 5pm

With my best wishes to you all,

Mrs Alex Hems MA Oxon
