Blogs and News - St George's School For Girls, Edinburgh
On Thursday 10 May, all of the Primary 4 girls dressed up as Roman soldiers. Quintus from the Antonine Guard came to visit us and tell us all about the Roman Army. He was dressed as a Roman soldier with a helmet, shield, javelin and gladius. He brought with him many artefacts and showed us how the Romans would have looked after and washed themselves.
He showed us different things you can do with a Roman shield and some of the formations the army would have used to defend themselves. We particularly enjoyed the battles and making the ‘tortoise’ to protect ourselves in battle!
The Roman shield is red for Mars the God of war. The Romans were very successful at lots of things like building forts, roads and cities. He told us about the different Roman Emperors who came to Britain and why we have two walls across the country. The Romans stayed in Britain for about 400 years… nearly 2000 years ago!
Great fun was had by all!
