Blogs and News - St George's School For Girls, Edinburgh
A culture of nurture has never been more important than in these challenging times. So, with this in mind, girls in L4 have created a “Kindness Station” in Lower School.
Tilly H, Immy, Tilly S, Lucy and Katie have designed a wall display with envelopes full of inspiring and helpful messages.
Girls can pop into the Lower School support for learning base and “take what they need” from a wall display with envelopes labelled: kindness, laughter, bravery, confidence, growth-mindset and “grit” (meaning resilience).
The girls discussed helpful phrases and then typed or reproduced them in beautiful handwriting and placed them in the envelopes attached to their wall display. Phrases such as:
“It’s not that you can’t do it; it’s that you can’t do it YET”
“I can tell you tried your best on this”.
“I love how you didn’t give up, even when the work was difficult”.
“Stop trying to calm the storm. Calm yourself. The storm will pass.”
“kindness begins with the understanding that we all struggle.”
The making of the wall display involved deep thinking and discussion about which envelope was the best place for each quote found during the girls’ research and discussions. The girls often agreed that a phrase could equally fit into the bravery, confidence and grit envelopes so multiple copies of the encouraging phrase were made and distributed in all of them accordingly.
A nurturing approach has been promoted as a key ingredient in supporting children’s well-being on their return to school. The girls hope you will stop by and “take what you need”. There is no limit and they have promised to replenish the envelopes often. One of the envelopes is entitled “laughter” and the puns and rhymes and silly jokes in there will hopefully brighten the day of anyone in need of a smile.
