Blogs and News - St George's School For Girls, Edinburgh
On Tuesday 10th January, Tin-Tin, Anna, Kary and Umarah from L6 took a scenic train ride up to St Andrew's to attend the SCIS school's masterclass. There were a variety of experiments for us to do including making paracetamol and we got to work with students from all over Scotland.
We had the chance to use professional standard laboratory equipment and learnt an array of new techniques, including recrystallisation to remove impurities from our finished products. We then analysed our products using Infrared and NMR. It was interesting to see and try these machines that professional chemists regularly use but are not found in school laboratories.
After a full day of experimenting there was even time for an ice-cream before returning home. We really enjoyed ourselves and would recommend the trip to next year's Lower 6 wanting to improve and expand their chemical techniques.
