East District

Congratulations to Emma (U5) and Georgie (L5) who have been selected for the Under 16 East District Hockey Squad.

Report from Emma:

Towards the end of the summer term I was put forward to attend a Scotland Hockey talent day at Peffermill. Following this day I was asked to go to the residential Scottish Hockey talent camp at Glenalmond School at the start of August.  I was delighted to be given the opportunity to go and play hockey at a higher standard and improve my skills. The residential camp lasted three days, which were at the start of August. During the course of the three days there was a mixture of game time, training time, team challenges and many workshops. Although it was hard work it was great fun and I enjoyed working alongside girls who had already been part of the Scottish programme in previous years. We had been split into teams of around 6 or 7 prior to the camp, and started off by getting to know everyone in our team and also the members of the other teams. Everyone there got on extremely well and even though most of the activities were in our teams, there was also time to bond with the other members of the group.

The day after I had returned from the residential camp, I was very pleased to hear I had been one of the girls selected to go down South to St Alban's to play for the Under 15 Scottish Caledonian Cougars team. We were given the training dates and times and from the minute I stepped on the pitch for the first training session to the minute I stepped off the pitch after our last game, I had one of the best experiences ever. We had three training sessions prior to going down to north London, where we all worked extremely hard both physically and mentally, whether that was on the pitch playing hockey, or inside taking notes. On the morning of Wednesday 23 August, the rest of the girls and I set off for St Alban's. After the 11 hour bus journey we were all quite exhausted, but within 5 minutes of arriving we were out on the pitch training for our first game the following day. All well rested we were ready to jump into Thursday. The morning flew past as we were all so excited for our first game against Mercia Lynx which started at 4pm. The game was very tense and exciting resulting in a 0-0 draw and a great team performance from the Cougars. The next day, the journey seemed to catch up with us, and although we tried our hardest we unfortunately conceded some goals late on and lost 6-0 against the Saxon Tigers. The result of the game meant that we played in the 5th and 6th play-off against the Celtic Jaguars. It was a great team performance which led to a 3-0 win. Overall I had a fantastic time and really hope there is more to come.

Report from Amber:

From the 23rd to the 26th of August I travelled down to St Alban's in England for the Futures Cup with the Under 18 Scotland hockey squad. 6 teams compete, one from Wales, one from Scotland and four from England. In this event Scotland are known as the Caledonian Cougars. Our first game was against the English side, the Wessex Leopards. The match was very close and we came back from 3-1 down to draw 4-4. Our second match was against the Welsh side, the Celtic Jaguars and we won 2-0 booking our place in the final. The final was on the last night and we played the Saxon Tigers. It was an extremely close game and ended 0-0, meaning it went to a shootout. The shootout went to sudden death but unfortunately the Tigers got the better of us. We were very proud of winning the silver medal and enjoyed the whole experience.
