Primary 1 and Primary 2
Most of our Nursery children progress to the Junior School. We also welcome new pupils in all year groups.
The Lower Primary consists of Primary 1 and Primary 2, the first two years of formal education. The pupils have a class teacher and a dedicated classroom assistant for each year group.
Teaching and Learning
In Primary 1 and Primary 2, we teach the curriculum through a blend of active play-based learning experiences (exploration, discovery and role-play) and formal teaching. Through these experiences, the children develop early literacy and numeracy & mathematical skills. Our 'Discovery Room' encourages curiosity and extends learning through active learning sessions.
Much of the curriculum is delivered through cross-curricular topics, the children develop their knowledge, skills and understanding, as well as providing the opportunity for the development of their personal, social and emotional skills as they learn about the world around them.
Literacy skills develop through the teaching of phonics. Lessons are fun-filled with rhymes, songs, games and hands-on activities. Very quickly, the pupils learn how to sound out and blend to help them in their reading and writing activities.
Through topic work and stories, children learn to write for a variety of purposes such as imaginative stories, factual leaflets or designing posters. They learn to write in sentences, to use exciting vocabulary and they are encouraged to ‘give it a go’ when trying to spell words.
Numeracy and Mathematics
We teach Numeracy and Mathematics through active, hands-on sessions. Children use counting bears, cubes, number lines and squares to aid them in their counting. They count forwards and backwards, to explore 2D shapes and 3D objects and learn to collate information into graphs and diagrams. Online resources on interactive whiteboards and using the Discovery Room supplement their learning.
Primary 1 and 2 children often take their learning outdoors to take full advantage of our wonderful outdoor spaces. They explore the Fantastical Forest, the purpose-built P1 outdoor learning area and many of the grassy areas of the school campus on our doorstep.
Sport and PE
All pupils in P1 & P2 receive PE lessons three times per week, delivered by our specialist PE staff. During one of the school terms, swimming is taught one lesson a week.
Our dedicated Junior School Music teacher teaches all P1 & P2 pupils music twice a week.
Specialist Modern Language teachers take the pupils in P1 & P2 regularly for a carousel of modern languages and cultures.
Specialist drama teaching is also provided at various times during the year.
Judo, Science, craft and Ballet are some of the activities included in the school day. These become part of the after school clubs and activities programme when pupils move up into the Middle Primary.
