Department of Mathematics

In the Mathematics department we aim to give the girls a broad education in Mathematics, considering some areas of the subject in greater depth. Our main priorities include providing an enjoyable and supportive environment that allows the girls to flourish in the subject and develop skills that will enhance their mathematical ability and support other subjects. The department run several clubs to support the progression of all the girls. The girls are also given the opportunity to enter into Mathematical competitions including the Scottish and UK Mathematical Challenges.

Lower School Mathematics

Building on their experience from their Primary years, students focus on developing a broad range of knowledge and skills and have the opportunity to develop at their own pace. Students will be provided with a variety of challenges that stimulate and promote the enjoyment of Mathematics. Algebra, statistics, ratio, probability and numeracy are just some of the topics students will build on as part of their journey towards Upper School.

Upper School Mathematics

In Upper 4 (S2) students continue to follow a broad curriculum, extending their knowledge of the core mathematical skills required for both the GCSE and SQA Higher Mathematics courses. Students continue to develop more complex skills that will enhance their ability to solve mathematical problems. In Lower 5 (S3) the students embark on the GCSE course. This course offers an excellent balance of depth and breadth in all areas of Mathematics giving the students a valuable qualification at the end of Upper 5 as well as being good preparation for Sixth Form.

Sixth Form Mathematics

In Lower Sixth form students embark on the SQA Higher Mathematics qualification and in Upper 6 students can choose to study SQA Advanced Higher qualifications (AH) in Mathematics, Statistics and Mechanics. These qualifications provide an excellent preparation for many different areas of higher education. Our numbers in sixth form are healthy and we regularly have over twenty girls sitting AH Mathematics.
