About our Sixth Form

The Pinnacle of St George’s School: Sixth Form

Our Sixth Form provides a world of new opportunities, both intellectual and personal. It’s why so many students describe the final two years as their very best.

Within our Sixth Form you’ll receive outstanding teaching, achieve exceptional Higher and Advanced Higher results, and quickly feel at home in a place that buzzes with energy and fun.

The best view in school is enjoyed from the Sixth Form hub. Our serene and sophisticated common room and study areas look across the Edinburgh skyline to the iconic Edinburgh Castle. Within this supportive haven, our Sixth Form and Careers team offers sage advice and good humour (as well as the occasional chocolate biscuit) to help you successfully navigate Sixth Form life.

We’re particularly proud that regularly over 95% of our leavers reach their first-choice destination each year, thanks to the sense of ambition, strong role models, and personalised approach to education that characterise St George’s.

Sixth Form: Paving Future Opportunity

We’ll support you in designing a curriculum pathway that builds on your strengths and passions and opens doors for the future. And don’t miss a myriad of opportunities to connect with the world beyond St George’s: international exchanges with schools and colleges; joint activities with Merchiston Castle school; sporting, musical or subject-based competitions; public speaking events like St George's TEDxYouth or Model United Nations; and exciting work experience placements.

Student Voice

Our Sixth Formers have a strong voice and care deeply about their school, playing a key role as leaders and change-makers in the school: from prefects to student council reps, House Captains, student-led society chairs or the Student Leadership Team.

This all helps to create a unique spirit of pride within our loyal, longstanding school community.

Subject Choice and Range

We pride ourselves on our breadth and flexibility of academic courses which enable you to pursue the widest choice of university courses or careers: Marine Biology, Medicine, Mathematics, Modern Languages, Music, Aeronautical Engineering, English, Anthropology, Art, International Relations, Business Management, Chemical Engineering, Classics, Physics with Astrophysics, Foundation courses in Art and Textiles… These are just some of the diverse range of courses that our girls have gone on to study at universities across the UK and the world. You may choose to follow in their footsteps or tread a different path.

"Nurturing and supportive. I can’t thank St George’s enough for sculpting the first 18 years of my life and helping me develop the skills I need to become an independent woman."

Welcome

“I enjoy working alongside young people as they develop an exciting vision of themselves and what their place in the world might be and helping to support them in preparing for this.

Our education at St George’s, and in the Sixth Form in particular, is bespoke and individual! Over the next two years, you will be supported by a variety of staff to ensure that you choose the most appropriate pathway. Our dedicated Sixth Form team will explore your aspirations with you and help you with your decisions and plans. They will help you to understand and develop your strengths, areas of interest and skills. It is great to work alongside a wonderfully talented body of teachers who go the extra mile to offer opportunities that enable our students to thrive in their chosen pathways.

Working alongside the Heads of School and prefect teams each year has been a real highlight for me. From coaching them through the university application process to supporting them as they develop their projects within the school community, I am always so proud of how they rise to the challenge and make a difference in our school."

"St George's has transformed my daughter. She had been adrift and unhappy in a large co-ed school that had very little expectation of its pupils. With the focus and support of the caring but demanding staff at St George's, she is flourishing socially and academically, and developing her interests in STEM subjects. She comes home every evening full of news and very cheerful."
