A Year of Reading with Upper School Book Club

This year, the Upper School Book Club brought students together to read, share perspectives, make connections, and build new friendships.
Over the course of the year, Book Club read a diverse selection of seven books and met monthly for student-led discussion. Their favourite? Boy Like Me by Simon James Green, which they voted as their top pick—followed closely by the powerful novel The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak.
For many students, Book Club is about more than the books themselves. Liyana (S2) shared, ‘It was a great experience to hear what everyone else had to say, and it was a great way to share.’ Another student noted, ‘It taught me a lot about books and opened my mind to reading things I normally wouldn’t.’
This was echoed by Devansshi (S2), who said, ‘As someone who never entered the romance section of the library – Boy Like Me opened my mind to the genre.’
Students also appreciate the way Book Club helps them stay engaged with reading despite busy schedules. One member shared, ‘Book Club is great if you love reading but can’t find the time—because it gives you a reason to continue reading every month.’ Another added, ‘You don’t fall into a reading slump.’
Above all, the club offers a welcoming environment for students to connect over a shared interest. ‘Book Club encourages me to talk to new people,’ said one student. As Liyana thoughtfully reflected, ‘I feel like we’re all good friends after.’
We’re proud of how students have embraced reading and community this year through Book Club, and we look forward to another exciting year ahead.
If your child loves reading—or is looking for a new way to connect with peers—encourage them to join Upper or Middle School Book Club next year!
Wishing all our readers a restful, book-filled summer!
