P6 Pupils Master Cycling Skills

Our Primary 6 pupils had a brilliant time developing their cycling skills during Bikeability sessions in May and June, expertly led by Mr Fowles and Ms Hazel.
Starting with Level One, the girls learnt essential bike maintenance through the ABCD check (Air in tyres, Brakes, Chains, and Drop) and the M-check, where they examined their bikes following the shape of the letter M. The sessions focused on building balance and technique through engaging activities including cycling in circles, high-fiving friends, and looking behind whilst riding to identify coloured cones.
By the final day, all pupils had successfully completed Level One and were ready to tackle Level Two challenges. The upper school grounds were transformed into a practice road complete with road markings, where the girls practised indicating, developed road awareness, and learnt about traffic signs and correct positioning on the road.
The programme proved hugely popular with participants. "Now I can ride my bike with one hand! I also learned how to check my bike, and I never knew how to do that before!" said Gigi.
Aria was particularly excited about the Level Two experience: "In level two we learned how to get on the road! We did not get to go on the road, but Mr Fowles drew a road around the upper school like a real road and teachers crossed it, that meant that we had to practise stopping and starting again."
The Bikeability programme has clearly given our P6 pupils valuable life skills and confidence on their bikes, preparing them for safe cycling.
