Primary Maths Challenge 2025 Feature

On Thursday, 22nd May, six of our young mathematicians participated in the Primary Enterprising Mathematics Challenge at George Watson's College. Four Remove students and two P6 pupils formed two teams of three, with each team comprising two Remove students and one P6 student.

A Day of Mathematical Fun

The challenge, organised by the University of Edinburgh's Moray House School of Education and George Watson's College, brought together primary schools from across Edinburgh for a day focused on mathematical thinking skills, teamwork, and enjoyment.

Our students participated in a packed programme of activities throughout the day:

  • Poster Challenge: Teams created informative posters on the theme of 'Codes and Cyphers', exploring everything from everyday codes like barcodes and postcodes to historical encryption methods such as Caesar cyphers and Morse code.
  • Team Challenges: Collaborative problem-solving activities that tested mathematical reasoning
  • Round Table Challenge: Interactive mathematical puzzles
  • Head-to-Head Challenge: Strategic gameplay using 'Sequencium', a two-player strategy game
  • Relay Challenge: Fast-paced mathematical problem solving with a competitive twist

Student Reflections

Sophie (Remove) shared: "I think it was very fun but challenging. Throughout the day, we participated in lots of activities, including a maths relay, problem-solving questions and number games."

Anaya (Remove) particularly enjoyed the puzzle-solving elements: "There were lots of activities, but my favourite was the one where we did little maths puzzles. Even though my team didn't get the highest score, we had lots of fun doing it."

Audrey (Remove) appreciated the collaborative nature of the event: "It was a wonderful experience, filled with teamwork and logical thinking. It was fun to engage across different year groups... My favourite was the relay race where we had to run and grab questions."

Results and Recognition

While George Watson's took home the poster competition prize and Clifton Hall claimed the overall trophy, our St George's teams demonstrated excellent mathematical thinking throughout the day. All participants received certificates of participation, celebrating their mathematical achievements and collaborative spirit. Well done to all our participants for showcasing such enthusiasm and mathematical prowess!
