Water of Leith Investigation 2025 Feature

Our S3 GCSE Geography students have recently been out and about putting their classroom learning into practice as part of their fieldwork studies.

On the 23 and 24 of May, the geographers ventured into the outdoors to conduct their physical geography fieldwork along the Water of Leith, exploring the river at three key stages: The Pentlands (Upper Course), Craiglockhart (Middle Course), and Stockbridge (Lower Course). Students worked collaboratively to measure the river’s width, depth, velocity, wetted perimeter, and identify flood defences using a variety of fieldwork techniques. The experience not only deepened their understanding of river processes but also showcased excellent teamwork and enthusiasm.

Back in the classroom, students are now busy analysing their results and writing up their findings, which will feature to their final GCSE examination.

Looking ahead, on 16 May, our geographers will shift focus to human geography, heading to Edinburgh’s historic Royal Mile to investigate the economic impact of tourism. During this fieldwork, students will conduct land use mapping, pedestrian and traffic counts, and tourist questionnaires to collect valuable data.

It’s been a fantastic hands-on learning experience so far, and we’re proud of how engaged and dedicated our students have been throughout the process.
