A St George's story: Rose, Upper Sixth

"My move from London was a big change, but the welcoming and relaxed environment here made it so much easier. Compared to my previous school, St George’s felt less intense and more supportive with a great balance between academics and sports, which helps manage stress. I also prefer the Scottish educational system for its broader choice of subjects and increased flexibility in study levels. Meanwhile, the Nepal trip was one of my defining school experiences – especially learning firsthand about conservation efforts through visiting the WWF base in Kathmandu and meeting a snow leopard conservation expert. It was this inspiring experience that solidified my interest in biology – so now I’m doing my EPQ on snow leopard conservation and I recently gave a TEDx talk on this subject. St George’s has given me opportunities to pursue my interests and build skills. Looking ahead, I’m excited to study biology and continue exploring conservation. The academic opportunities and real-world experiences here have prepared me for this next step, and I can’t wait to see where it leads…"

"For 16 years, St George’s has encouraged my natural curiosity, providing me with opportunities to explore my different academic and personal interests. Having been here since nursery, I've grown up in an environment which has always encouraged independent thinking and communication. I've always felt comfortable contributing to discussions and debates in the classroom, and have been fortunate to take on wider responsibilities, such as my role as Head Girl this year. This year I’ve been studying Advanced Higher Biology, Chemistry and History, and I am going on to study Law with English Law at the University of Aberdeen. Beyond academics, completing my Duke of Edinburgh Award and participating in CCF pushed me outside my comfort zone and built leadership qualities which will serve me well through the rest of my life.”

"My passion lies in engineering – specifically mechanical and automotive engineering – because I love understanding how things work. Maths, physics, and mechanics have been the foundation of my academic studies at St George’s, sparking my curiosity. One of my most exciting projects was helping to set up the F1 in Schools initiative as well as seeing our team progress to the national level. I’ve also been a Young STEM Leader, where I’ve led sessions on STEM-related topics, delivered presentations, and organised events like the recent Aerospace Careers Day. Outside the classroom, I’ve been head editor of the school’s ‘Independent Women’ magazine – our main achievement was to publish the first issue for five years and rebuild the brand. Balancing my editorial responsibilities with STEM studies has helped me develop a diverse skill set. I’m hoping to study Mechanical Engineering at Lancaster University.”

A St George's story: Abi, Upper Sixth

"Looking back, I can confidently say that joining St George’s in Primary 6 was the right decision. The close-knit community and smaller class sizes here have given me the support I needed to thrive academically and in my co-curricular pursuits. Hockey has certainly been a defining part of my journey: I only started playing when I joined St George’s but it quickly developed into a passion, eventually resulting in selection for the East District and Scottish Brave Development Programme. Meanwhile, my participation in the school’s Australia exchange programme involved spending four weeks in Sydney and gaining invaluable cultural exposure – an experience that helped build my confidence and develop a ‘yes’ mindset, encouraging me to take on new challenges without hesitation. Next year, I hope to study Politics and International Relations at Sheffield University. My passion for international affairs was sparked by studying Higher Modern Studies, where I loved exploring political systems. I’ve also been considering the possibility of pursuing a field hockey scholarship in the United States – that’s an opportunity I wouldn’t have even contemplated without the encouragement I’ve received at St George’s.”

"I joined St George’s in Primary 4 from a local state school because my parents wanted to offer me greater academic challenge and individual support. So I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunities I’ve enjoyed here, and believe that the small class sizes, supportive teachers, and breadth of subject choices have been crucial in shaping my confidence and ambition. The all-girls environment has given me the freedom to explore my interests without external pressures. Outside academic life, I’ve participated in a variety of extracurricular activities, including playing the clarinet; and my volunteering roles have been really rewarding – from assisting with the Remove History class to co-running the Lower School Debating Club. Looking ahead, I’m excited about studying law at university and the possibilities it will bring. St George’s has provided me with a strong foundation, and I feel very well-prepared for the challenges to come."

"I’ve always been fascinated by physics and space, but initially thought it might be too challenging to pursue as a career. However, my teachers at St George’s inspired me to believe in my abilities. A school visit to CERN in Geneva gave me the final push to aim for physics, as I saw firsthand how physics is applied outside the classroom. Taking part in a Space Design competition in London was another highlight. It taught me valuable teamwork skills and offered a glimpse of working in a physics-related field. Now I’m excited to study physics (or possibly physics with astronomy) at university. Away from study, I’ve particularly enjoyed CCF and its summer residential camp and training alongside Merchiston School; as well as helping to launch the Big Sister Club club where younger girls can come to us for advice or just to chat.”

"My St George’s experience has been filled with incredible opportunities that have shaped my educational journey. One of the most pivotal moments was becoming an Arkwright Scholar and I was fortunate to be selected as an Amazon Future Engineer. As part of this scholarship, I received mentorship and funding throughout my Advanced Higher years, including during my EPQ on the integration of AI and machine learning in cancer diagnosis and pathology. This exciting EPQ has allowed me to blend my interests in medicine and technology and gain insights into cutting-edge research. Meanwhile, MedSoc, choir, netball and DoE have all played a big part in my school life. Another memorable experience was the Nepal trip – a varied and enriching adventure: from exploring Kathmandu to volunteering at an elephant charity focused on animal welfare. Now I hope to study medicine at university, with offers from Edinburgh and Dundee among my top choices.”

"My time at St George’s has been shaped in ways I never expected. Biology is the subject that makes the most sense to me – but my passion for infectious diseases and microbiology only clicked in this year. The encouragement from my teachers helped me realise it was worth pursuing further: in particular,  my Biology teacher created an engaging learning environment and consistently supported me. Outside the classroom, I participated in the Biology Olympiad, as part of the school’s enrichment programme, and attended a programme on human biology at the Roslin Institute. I’m also part of STEM Society and a Young STEM leader where I introduce younger pupils to the world of STEM, helping them understand its importance and how to get involved. Now, thanks to the personalised careers advice at St George’s, I’m excited about what’s next. I’ve applied for five different Biology-related university courses, and confident I’m heading in the right direction."

A St George's story: Mahdiyah, Upper Sixth

"The supportive environment at St George’s has given me numerous opportunities to grow both academically and personally. I’ve been involved in the Language Leaders programme for the past two years and recently organised the Language Winter Fair – an experience that’s helped me develop my organisation and leadership skills. I’ve also played netball and participated in Miseducation, a student-run group that focuses on education topics. School trips have been another enriching part of my time here, especially the biology field trip to Millport and the Spanish trip which helped immerse me in the language and culture. Looking ahead, I’m excited to study biology at university. Although it’s a challenging subject, I feel well-prepared thanks to the combination of academic rigour, leadership opportunities, and personal growth at St George’s. I now plan to pursue a degree in Biological Sciences at the University of Edinburgh or the University of Glasgow, as both have excellent programmes and research opportunities. I'm looking forward to expanding my knowledge and gaining hands-on experience.”

A St George's story: Kiana, Upper Sixth

"I’ve always had a love for science, especially problem-solving and understanding how things fit together and work. My interest in veterinary medicine grew naturally from my love of animals, having grown up in the countryside with horses, chickens, and dogs. Throughout my time here, I’ve been involved in some incredible experiences. One of the recent highlights was our Biology field trip to Millport; and my Biology teacher also recommended that I visit the Roslin Institute, where we explored avian flu testing and ELISA laboratory techniques. These experiences really deepened my interest in the field. Beyond science, music has been a huge part of my education here: I played the violin in the orchestra and joined the school ceilidh band. Outside of school, I’m a keen horse rider and represented Scotland at the World Internationals in 2023. I feel ready for my next challenge thanks to everything I’ve gained from my time at St George’s."

A St George's story: Anna, Upper Sixth

“As a boarder, I’ve greatly benefited from living on campus. It has allowed me to spend more time studying in the evening without worrying about having to get up early the next morning! I’ve also formed friendships with people I may not have met if we hadn’t boarded together so I’m grateful for those close relationships. At school, one of my most influential experiences has been as Secretary-General of Model United Nations (MUN). MUN has encouraged me to think critically, research global issues, and speak publicly. My visit to the Reichstag in Berlin further cemented my interest in international politics and sparked a desire to potentially work abroad. Meanwhile, as part of the Big Sister Club, I’ve mentored younger students – it’s a rewarding experience to give back to the school community here. I’m now hoping to study philosophy and politics at the University of Glasgow. Looking back overall, St George’s has given me the space to explore my interests and the flexibility to adapt my academic focus as I discovered new passions."

"I’ve had an incredible journey at St George’s. My love for maths began early and has deepened through the many opportunities here, including participation in the annual Scottish Maths Challenge and Physics Olympiads (a timed exam that tests knowledge). These formative experiences encouraged me to explore new ways of thinking. Beyond academics, I’ve been actively involved in various leadership roles such as Smarties Club for Lower School students, where we engage in weekly problem-solving games and support maths homework and revision. I’ve also taken part in Young STEM Leaders which has honed my public speaking skills while helping inspire younger pupils. Now I hope to study maths and statistics at university – so I’ll always be grateful for the support from my teachers, especially during the university application process. This close-knit, all-girls environment has allowed me to thrive and pursue subjects like computer science without hesitation.”
