Primary 1 Entrance Assessment

Starting school is an exciting time. With good preparation and encouragement, most children will settle easily and start school with a smile!

When does this happen?

As your daughter is about to start school next August, we would like to invite you to register for our Play Morning on the morning of Thursday 14 January from 9.30-10.30 am (this date has been postponed due to the current COVID-19 restrictions). A completed new student application form and a registration fee of £75 are required to sit an entrance assessment. Find out more by contacting Admissions T: 0131 311 8008. E: admissions@stge.org.uk

Where will they be?

In our Primary 1 Discovery Room beside the two classrooms, your daughter will engage in carefully planned activities. When children are as young as four or five, we feel that there is certainly no need for a formal assessment and interview: our experienced Primary 1 team will observe the girls as they play with one another and assess their skills informally through interaction and conversations with them.

What will they be doing?

During the activities, we are looking for how the girls interact with each other, how nicely they can sit and listen, how they respond to very straight forward questions, how they follow instructions and how willingly and competently they participate in the activities.  We look a little at fine motor skills and the girls’ ability to talk clearly and confidently.

How can I help to prepare my daughter?

All you really need to do is talk to your daughter about what she might expect during the morning and we’ll do the rest. We are looking for your daughter’s readiness for school and identifying any support she might need.

What happens next?

Following the assessment morning, we shall write to you with a little feedback and any offers for a place in our Primary 1 will be sent out on 28 January and the reply by date is Thursday 23 February 2021

We look forward to meeting your daughter on Thursday 14 January.
