Boarder from Germany 2024
Hi, I’m Emilia from a small town near Cologne, Germany. This term, I’ve been privileged to spend time as a boarding student at St George’s School in Edinburgh, and it’s been an incredible experience of growth, learning, and new friendships.

A Welcoming and Supportive Start
Coming to a new country and school is undoubtedly nerve-wracking but St George’s made the transition seamless. “The boarding house felt like a family right away. The small size made it easy to meet people and form close connections.” The house parents were incredibly supportive, always there to talk if I felt homesick, which was a huge relief during those initial days.
The day-to-day routine at St George’s is structured yet flexible. Mornings start with breakfast, and the school day is filled with engaging lessons and activities. After school, I could unwind in the boarding house or participate in clubs. “The relaxed evenings chatting with friends made every day feel special and balanced.”
Embracing a New Culture and Community
One of the best parts of boarding at St George’s has been the cultural diversity. With friends from France, Spain, Australia, and beyond, I’ve learned so much about different ways of life. “It’s amazing to see how much we all have in common despite coming from so many different places.”
Living in Edinburgh has been another highlight. The city strikes a perfect balance between the energy of a capital and the charm of a smaller town. “It’s not as overwhelming as London but still full of things to do. The vibe is friendly and the architecture is stunning.”
A Unique Learning Experience
The academic environment at St George’s has been inspiring. I even got the chance to study psychology, a subject not offered at my school in Germany. “Taking psychology was one of the best decisions I made. It’s sparked an interest I might pursue in the future.” The teachers here genuinely care, creating a comfortable and engaging atmosphere that has helped me thrive.
Building Lifelong Memories
From pottery painting weekends to attending my first rugby match, St George’s has offered countless memorable moments. “These activities brought us together as a boarding community and were experiences I’d never had before.”
For anyone considering studying abroad, I can wholeheartedly recommend St George’s. “The small, family-like boarding environment, combined with the welcoming culture and supportive teachers, makes it a truly unique place to grow.”
St George’s is more than a school—it’s a second home.
