Scottish Mathematical Challenge Awards

The Scottish Mathematical Challenge is a problem-solving competition for individual pupils in Scottish secondary schools, which began in Session 1976-77. The aim is to promote Mathematics as a source of interest and pleasurable achievement. Marks are given for explanations of answers rather than for simply getting the correct answer.

On 13th June, the winners of Gold, Silver and Bronze Certificates were invited to the prizegiving ceremony at Napier University, Sighthill Campus, where they received their certificate and a much-prized Mathematical Challenge mug. Our students found the experience both inspiring and educational, particularly enjoying the fascinating talk about the mathematics behind sound waves and frequency that was presented during the ceremony.

We are delighted to congratulate our award winners:

Primary Division: Selma (R) achieved a Gold Award. Sophie (R) received a Silver Award and reflected that "it was a fun experience" attending the ceremony at Edinburgh Napier University. Anaya, Bronwyn and Poppy (R) all earned Bronze Awards

Secondary Division (pictured above): Four students achieved Gold Awards: Zara (S3), Claire (S3), Clara (S4) and Samanthi (L6). Samanthi described the ceremony as "a truly inspiring experience that combined maths and music in a way I hadn't encountered before," particularly enjoying learning why certain musical intervals work harmoniously due to frequency relationships.

Bridget (S3) and Ashmita (L6) received Silver Awards. Ashmita found the event "enjoyable, inspiring and motivating," noting how seeing so many other students passionate about mathematics encouraged her to continue participating in maths competitions.

Isobel (S3), Linbo (S3) and Saanvi (U6) earned Bronze Awards.

The ceremony not only celebrated mathematical achievement but also demonstrated how mathematics connects to other subjects like music, making it a memorable experience for all our students who attended.
