Extracurricular Activities for Boarders at St George’s

Every week, we organise exciting House events and after-school activities that bring all our boarders together providing them with enriching experiences both within and beyond our walls and creating lifelong memories.

One of the favourites among our boarders is our baking and cooking sessions, where they get to prepare seasonal and traditional dishes from around the world. And if they are a film buff, there are regular film screenings in the cosy Common Room.

5pm Club

For our younger boarders, we have the "5pm Club." This runs on weekdays and offers a range of recreational activities before supper is served in the boarding house. It's a great way to unwind and have some fun after a busy day.

Weekends at St George's for the boarders

Every weekend, we organize cultural and recreational outings led by our dedicated staff members. From swimming and bowling to ice skating and exploring Edinburgh's historic sites, there's always something thrilling to look forward to. Recent trips include Stirling Castle, Durham Cathedral, North Berwick, and Linlithgow Palace.

Some of our outings are shared with boys from Merchiston Castle School, and our annual ceilidh with our friends from Merchiston is the highlight of our social calendar.

Here's a taste of some popular outings and activities you can expect:

  • Enjoy the magical atmosphere of Edinburgh's Winter Wonderland at Christmas.
  • Cheer on your favourite team at the 6 Nation Rugby matches.
  • Get creative with arts and crafts projects.
  • Unleash your culinary skills during cooking sessions.
  • Experience the joy of a Christmas pantomime trip.
  • Celebrate festive events like Christmas, Halloween, and Burns Night.
  • Embrace cultural traditions with the Moon Festival and Chinese New Year.
  • Feel the thrill of extreme karting or even horse riding on the beach in East Lothian.
  • Embark on a shopping spree in Glasgow.
  • Explore the fascinating exhibits at the National Museum of Scotland.

We understand the importance of worship, and we happily accommodate our boarders who attend places of worship. Our House Staff are always ready to assist, and they may even accompany younger boarders when needed. Additionally, from time to time, our boarders attend Chapel Services at Merchiston Castle School, expanding their spiritual horizons.
