Activities and Outing for Boarders

There is a weekly programme of activities, outings and events for boarders and their visiting friends.

Activities

Arts and crafts are very popular and cover a whole range of activities.

A week does not go by in Houldsworth without 'Big Cook, Little Cook', the boarders' Cookery Club. At this, girls enjoy baking and preparing traditional dishes from around the world.

A Film Club is held each Saturday evening in the Common Room for which girls put forward suggestions and enjoy popcorn in the interval. Games and outdoor activities such as Chinese skipping and rounders also feature in the weekly programme.

Social Events

Boarding life can be great fun and it provides opportunities for enormous personal growth, but we recognise that it is important for boarders to have plenty to look forward to.

To this end, assisted by the girls themselves, we organise a number of House events, which bring all of the boarders together.

In the Autumn Term, the Upper Six organise a fancy dress party with games and prizes. Each term there is a whole house theatre trip and at regular intervals we hold theme nights, such as an Italian Evening or a celebratory meal for something like Chinese New Year.

Outings

Every weekend there is an outing, which is led by a member of staff. Popular trips include swimming, bowling and ice-skating and visits to Edinburgh's many historic sites. Other Sunday trips go further and have included Stirling Castle, Durham Cathedral, North Berwick and Linlithgow Palace

Some of these outings are with boys from Merchiston Castle School and the highlight of the boarders' social calendar is their annual ceilidh with friends from Merchiston.

Worship

A number of boarders attend places of worship. The House Staff are very happy to facilitate this and may be able to accompany younger boarders.

From time to time boarders from St George's also attend services at Merchiston Castle School.
