The Faculty of Support for Learning

The Faculty of Support for Learning is a whole school resource responsible for the support of students from nursery to Upper Six (S6) in five key areas: additional support needs, English as a second language (ESOL), academic mentoring, gifted & talented and access arrangements in examinations. This broad role allows us to support students with specific learning difficulties, general academic difficulties and those who require general academic guidance.

In order to maximise potential, it is considered important to develop relevant support strategies that complement individual pupil’s learning requirements. To this end, Support for Learning staff support all students in an inclusive and as individual a manner as possible. Through collaboration with teaching staff, parents and, when required, outside agencies the faculty is committed to encouraging and promoting the creation of successful learners and confident individuals through small group teaching outwith the classroom, co-operative teaching from P1 to Upper Five and tutorial provision in Lower 6 and Upper 6. Such interaction ensures that teaching matches each individual’s needs and that the educational environment is accessible and stimulating, but also challenging.

The school’s current Accessibility Strategy ensures appropriate development is ongoing within curriculum, communication and physical access to the site.

Outwith school, Enquire – the Scottish advice service for additional support for learning - offers independent, confidential advice and information on additional support for learning through their telephone helpline 0845 123 2303, email enquiry service: or the website
