Information about St George's School, Edinburgh

What makes boarding at St George's unique?

Home from home: Boarding with us

Boarding at St George’s Private Boarding School is special and unlike any other boarding experience in Scotland.

We create a 'home from home' environment for our boarders in which they feel secure within a close-knit structured environment: just like siblings in a large family, housemates of different ages learn from – and support – each other.

All our boarders live in Houldsworth House, a small and friendly boarding house at the edge of the school's private grounds, only a 20-minute walk from the centre of Edinburgh, Scotland's iconic capital city.

Discover the Magic of Edinburgh: A Perfect Blend of Beauty and Culture

St George's School is based in a tranquil parkland setting, with views of Edinburgh Castle, in the heart of the city. Of course, Edinburgh boasts a stunning landscape, a rich cultural heritage, and is a modern vibrant city. It is consistently ranked among the world’s most desirable cities to live in.

As a boarder, you can immerse yourself in all the city has to offer, from vibrant cultural experiences to exciting sports and activities. You will thrive in our environment that nurtures both academic excellence and personal growth.

Although we offer a British boarding experience, we thoroughly pride ourselves on being an international community and love sharing and celebrating each other's customs and festivals. Boarders are usually an equal split of British and international pupils ranging in age from 10 to 18.

We take no more than 50 boarders at one time, so we can always give our full attention to ensure a smooth-running and friendly atmosphere within Houldsworth House.

Research tells a consistent story surrounding single sex education; the right environment at the right developmental stage makes a real difference.

Genuine pastoral care

Every student at St George’s is known, valued and celebrated for who they are.

Our bespoke and highly responsive pastoral care ensures that the unique needs of each individual are met to enable them to thrive and flourish and succeed in the world beyond school.

Known and valued

We know our students – and their families – exceptionally well and this is the foundation of all we do. This starts with the excellent relationships between teachers and students in form classes. With maximum class sizes of 23 (and frequently smaller), our teachers ensure every girl thrives, makes good progress and feels fully involved in school life.

Learning from mistakes and celebrating successes, every student is encouraged to see their own strengths and engage positively with feedback.

Support and good role modelling comes from form prefects, House captains and buddies, all contributing to guide behaviour and build a strong community of confident, healthy and resilient young people.

Programmes and resources

Our programme of Personal and Social Education (PSE) prepares girls to face the world with confidence, inner strength and high self-esteem. There are also evening talks and webinars for parents, often reflecting classroom topics alongside other relevant issues for parents.

We have a full-time NMC registered nurse and counselling provision – well used by pupils and completely free from any stigma. Plus, a much-loved ‘Therapet’ session every Friday, where our furry friends lend a listening ear!

Above all, we understand the specific needs of girls and how to guide well-rounded, well-grounded individuals to be the confident, fearless young women, ready to step into their future.

Wellbeing: Our partnership with Tooled Up Education

We have a partnership with Tooled Up Education a comprehensive digital platform that offers a wealth of evidence-based resources designed to support parents, school communities, and staff. The platform provides tools and information to help families navigate the challenges of parenting, ensuring children and young people continue to thrive.

The most future-ready students are those who can learn, adapt, collaborate and think critically in environments that are constantly evolving. At St George’s we weave these skills into every personal pathway of every single girl, whenever they join us.

Welcome to a Best of British curriculum, complemented by a rich and varied co-curriculum and enhanced with future-critical skills. Designed - in every way - for girls. It is the St George's Signature Curriculum.

Extracurricular School Activities in Upper School and Sixth Form

Enrichment beyond the core academic curriculum at St George’s is an important part of each student’s development within the school environment. We offer a rich and diverse range of activities and opportunities that help develop their passions or explore new interests. The co-curricular programme offers challenge, service to others, group cooperation, team participation and leadership; while supporting risk taking and building resilience in an environment where abilities and talents are recognised and nurtured.

From sports to expressive arts, we encourage all our students to take part in clubs and after-school activities that will help them progress into higher education and guide them towards their chosen career path.

Our co-curriculum programme inspires, drives and unites pupils at St George’s. We encourage our students to try out new clubs and activities and seize the chances that come with their education. Students can pick from more than 150 different activities, including volunteering locally, earning their Duke of Edinburgh's Gold Award, and going on tours and excursions abroad.

The range of offerings in the co-curriculum guarantees that music, sport and theatre all play a significant role in the girls' lives, and our well-known Model UN and Debating clubs have a long history of promoting discussion.

Opportunities for leadership, novel challenges and community service are provided via outdoor education, the Duke of Edinburgh's Award and the Combined Cadet Force.

We are committed to educating our pupils to be responsible citizens of the world.

Our ‘Best of British’ model uses the Curriculum for Excellence, GCSE and SQA qualifications as the basis for flexible individual pathways. Take a dive into this year's excellent exam results.

At St George's, girls commence their secondary education in Remove (P7). This is a year earlier than most schools in Scotland to support girls to thrive through building and consolidating an excellent attitude to learning and risk-taking. It offers the opportunity to be put outside their comfort zone in an environment where they feel comfortable to fail and develop resilience, where they are known as an individual and they value the ethos.

In Remove (P7), S1 and S2 we offer a broad and balanced curriculum based on a solid academic foundation across a wide range of subjects that is combined with opportunities to learn, exercise problem-solving and hone interpersonal skills. We reinforce the value of curiosity to support girls to feel empowered and confident to find personal strength and motivation in their learning experience. Through this, girls are given the chance to understand their interests and strengths before making personal subject choices for S3 and S4.

The curriculum for each subject at this stage is developed with consideration of Curriculum for Excellence, Key Stage 3 and future GCSE and Qualifications Scotland, reflecting our Best of British approach and embracing a broad focus, variety and choice.

At this stage we encourage breadth and balance. Through a range of different subject areas, students develop the skills that will help them become inspired learners, courageous and independent young women and good global citizens.

St George's students take eight subjects including at least one science (Biology, Physics, Chemistry), one social science (History, Geography, Religious Studies), English Language, English Literature (or ESOL for non-native speakers) and Mathematics plus four other subject choices from:

Language - Chinese, French, Spanish, Latin
Expressive Arts - Drama, Music
Business and Enterprise - Business Studies
Art and Creative Technologies - Art, Design & Manufacture, Computer Science
Health & Wellbeing - Physical Education, Practical Cookery
Support for Learning can also be included in place of an examination subject
All students have the opportunity to complete a Higher Project Qualification

Courses last for two years and will lead to a GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education, England) or National 5 (Qualifications Scotland ). Courses are carefully selected from either qualification agency based on scrutiny of course relevance, quality, student experience and feedback and decisions reached through consultation with leading universities and industry employers, and allows us to provide flexible and individual pathways.

With a focus on breadth, we are pleased that most girls take five subjects in Lower Sixth at Higher Level (Qualifications Scotland), including 'crash' Highers in subjects not studied in S3 and S4. They select from a wide and flexible choice of subjects which caters for individual needs.

In Upper Sixth many girls take at least three Advanced Higher courses or A Level qualifications in certain subjects.

The range of courses offered in Lower 6 and Upper 6 is selected in consultation with leading universities and industry employers.

The Scottish Higher is a university matriculation qualification and remains the gold standard for entry to Scottish universities. Increasingly, Other British universities make unconditional offers to Scottish applicants with five good Highers. Girls usually apply for university entry in the autumn term of Upper 6. Students applying for Oxford, Cambridge or other competitive courses have a University Preparation programme, that is open to all, from S4, while students applying to top universities worldwide are fully supported with their applications and preparation. Each girl is supported as an individual in their application and all future pathways are supported.
