We are proud to announce that our Independent Women (IW) magazine are Shine Award winners! The Shine School Media Awards is a national competition rewarding UK secondary schools who produce an outstanding newspaper, magazine, podcast or multimedia project.

On the 29th June, U6 Editor CJ and Mrs Magee attended Shine School Media Awards in London. IW won three awards: Highly Commended in Best Printed Publication, Best Feature, and Best Photograph winner for Samanthi’s ‘Reluctant Bride’.

Our student magazine has been an integral part of school life since 1896, and today’s team of twenty continue the St George’s spirit of challenging the status quo. Their most recent issue, Classic Art, Reconstructed responded to Shine’s theme of ‘Abuse of power’ with striking reinterpretations of iconic artworks through a female lens. The pioneers of IW were radical in 1896, and it’s clear that St George’s girls continue to think independently and shape their own ideas.

The cohesive team effort of IW ensured that all the voices of the school are covered. Their outlook is varied and inquisitive, including a range of topics from the impact of AI on the creative arts, sustainability in everyday life, and Venezuala’s tension with the US.

We look forward to seeing how IW continues to be rich in tradition while questioning convention, in next year’s edition.
