Last term, St George's welcomed Stuart Ferguson from the Quantum Software Lab..

to deliver a series of workshops introducing students to the world of quantum computing.

Across two sessions, Stuart worked with both our S1 students and senior Computer Science students, exploring how quantum computers differ from the computers we use every day and why they could play an important role in solving some of the world's most complex problems.

Using mazes and puzzles, students investigated how computers solve hard problems and why some scale badly. Stuart then introduced the fundamental ideas behind quantum computing, including how quantum algorithms may offer advantages for specific types of computational problems.

The workshops were highly engaging, with students enthusiastically participating throughout and demonstrating impressive curiosity. The quality of questions was particularly noteworthy, with many students thinking creatively about future applications of quantum computing and its potential impact on fields such as medicine, scientific research, cybersecurity, materials science, and climate modelling.

Our Advanced Higher students had this to say:

"I learned that some problems are far more complex than others. We explored mazes of varying difficulty and used graphs to compare the amount of effort needed to solve them. We also compared how CPUs, GPUs and even humans approach problem-solving. One of the most interesting parts was discussing whether the human brain has similarities to a quantum computer. We talked about how humans use instinct and emotions, while computers rely on algorithms and neural networks. However, we also explored the idea that some human behaviours are learned, leading to some fascinating discussions about where the differences really lie."

By the end of the sessions, students had developed a stronger understanding of the fundamentals of quantum computing and gained insight into one of the most exciting and rapidly developing areas of modern technology.

These workshops form part of a wider programme of outreach and curriculum development linked to Fearless Women in Computing. We are working to develop engaging computing resources and experiences that can be shared with schools more widely, helping to inspire the next generation of girls to explore cutting-edge technologies and careers in computing.

A huge thank you to Stuart for sharing his expertise and for giving our students a fascinating introduction to the future of computing.
