UKMT Senior Maths Challenge

On 9th October several of our Upper School students took part in the UKMT Senior Mathematical Challenge.

The Challenge is a 90-minute, multiple-choice paper which encourages mathematical reasoning, precision of thought, and fluency in using basic mathematical techniques to solve interesting problems. The problems on the Senior Mathematical Challenge are designed to make students think. Most are accessible, yet still challenge those with more experience.

All participants have received a certificate of participation. To recognise the highest performers in the Challenge, the top-scoring 66% of participants are awarded Bronze, Silver and Gold certificates. Students that are 'Best in Year' or 'Best in School' have also received a badge to denote this on their certificates.

We congratulate

Ashmita (U6) on her Gold certificate;

Bella (S4), Clara (L6) and Deepti (U6) on their Silver certificate;

Claire (not pictured), Isobel, Linbo (S4) and Samanthi (U6) on their Bronze certificate.

Ashmita (L6) was invited to participate in the follow-on competition Senior Kangaroo based on their high score in the Senior Mathematical Challenge.

Senior Team Maths Challenge 2025

This year, four of our students took on the exciting challenge of representing the school in the Senior Team Maths Challenge, a national competition that brings together students from across the UK to test their mathematical thinking, teamwork, and communication. The Challenge took place at Loretto on 10th November.

The event involved three fast-paced rounds—the Group, the Crossnumber and the Shuttle—each demanding not only strong numeracy but the ability to collaborate under pressure. What stood out most was not just the scores or results, but the confidence, creativity, and curiosity our pupils displayed throughout the day.

They returned not only with new strategies and problem-solving skills, but with a renewed enthusiasm for mathematics and a sense of pride in what they had achieved together.

We congratulate Claire (S4), Clara (L6), Ashmita and Deepti (U6) for representing the school so admirably.
