Extracurricular School Activities in Upper School and Sixth Form

Enrichment beyond the core academic curriculum at St George’s is an important part of each student’s development within the school environment. We offer a rich and diverse range of activities and opportunities that help develop their passions or explore new interests. The co-curricular programme offers challenge, service to others, group cooperation, team participation and leadership; while supporting risk taking and building resilience in an environment where abilities and talents are recognised and nurtured.

From sports to expressive arts, we encourage all our students to take part in clubs and after-school activities that will help them progress into higher education and guide them towards their chosen career path.

“I’ve been lucky enough to go on many school trips including the hockey tour to Holland and volunteering in Costa Rica (genuinely the best two weeks of my life).”
Kate, Class of 2023

Curriculum activities

The sports curriculum broadens for girls, and we provide a host of other sports co-curricular activities. Activities are tailored around the girls, offering sports sessions every afternoon and a crowded fixture list of inter-school matches and tournaments.

Girls are free to exercise choice in selecting their activities. Some focus on high-level performance in games, others select more aesthetic and/or fitness-based activities, and some prefer a broad spectrum of activities. The girls work with their teacher to design their chosen programme, taking into consideration the desires and preferences of each member of the class.

Some of our sports on offer:

  • Hockey, Netball, Tennis, Cricket, Lacrosse, Athletics, Myfit, Spin, Bootcamp, Judo and Fencing

The Music Department is a busy one, but more importantly a friendly department with a wonderfully supportive environment.

A wide assortment of musical opportunities is available for senior students, such as Concert Band, Senior Choir, Rock Band, Orchestra, Off the Scale (traditional music), Flute Group, Senior Strings, Cantate, Jazz Band and more.

Music lessons take place in the fabulous Robertson Music Centre and have a strong focus on the three components of music: performing, listening and composing.

Higher Music, Advanced Higher Music and Higher Music Technology courses are offered to Sixth Form musicians. Music theory and aural training are also offered in Grades 1-8.

The Upper School Art Studios are a dynamic hub of activity throughout and beyond the school day, where students are encouraged to become self-motivated and independent learners. Students have access to printmaking, ceramics/clay, IT facilities, and an extensive reference library. DT students build on the skills they learned and add further skills that bring in digital design to create prototypes. They are introduced to 2D and 3D Computer-Aided Design (CAD), working with the laser cutter and 3D printers, whilst also refining their design skills and practical workshop skills.

Our varied and extensive curriculum allows students to use drama techniques such as role-play, improvisation, script work and characterisation to question and reflect on the world around them.

There are two large-scale Upper School productions every year, where students may take on roles as actors, directors, stage managers, costume designers or technicians in lighting and sound.

Upper School students are invited to run drama clubs or direct shows for Lower School students, developing their skills in leadership and management.

Students in Upper 4 can apply for a reciprocal exchange to our partner schools in Toronto, Canada and Philadelphia and Fort Worth in America. The duration of the programme ranges from 2- 4 weeks.

Students in Upper 5 and Lower 6 can apply for a reciprocal exchange to our partner schools in Australia, Chile, New Zealand and South Africa. The duration of the exchange is 4 – 6 weeks.

There are opportunities for expeditions with Global Action to Nepal and Costa Rica which run every 2 years.

Co-curriculum Activities and Clubs Programme

The co-curriculum programme inspires, drives and unites pupils at St George’s. We encourage our students to try out new clubs and activities and seize the chances that come with their education. Students can pick from more than 150 different activities, including volunteering locally, earning their Duke of Edinburgh's Gold Award, and going on tours and excursions abroad.

The range of offerings in the co-curriculum guarantees that music, sport and theatre all play a significant role in the girls' lives, and our well-known Model UN and Debating clubs have a long history of promoting discussion.

Opportunities for leadership, novel challenges and community service are provided via outdoor education, the Duke of Edinburgh's Award and the Combined Cadet Force.

We are committed to educating our pupils to be responsible citizens of the world.
