New Head January 2017

St George’s School for Girls, Edinburgh, is delighted to announce Mrs Alex Hems as its new Head. 

Mrs Hems has spent twenty years working in leading UK girls’ schools.

St George’s, founded in 1888 by the pioneers of women’s education in Scotland, is now Scotland’s largest all girls’ school and the only all-through girls’ school in Edinburgh.  

Alex Hems was Deputy Head at Wycombe Abbey, since 2013, having previously been Deputy Head at Francis Holland School, London, since 2011. Before that she was Head of Senior School (Sixth Form) at St Paul’s Girls’ School in London from 2007, and Head of Sixth Form at North London Collegiate School from 2003.

Having read English at Somerville College, Oxford, Mrs Hems teaches English but also enjoyed teaching Latin early on in her career.

Mrs Hems is married to William and they have two daughters, Charlotte and Sophie.
