Coastal Learning in the Nursery
Biodiversity Environment Access Cross Curriculum Health and Wellbeing

Last Thursday, the nursery children were full of excitement as we wrapped up warmly for our first trip to Silverknowes beach. The morning had been very wet, but fortunately at lunchtime, the rain stopped and the sun shone. We travelled in our school minibus, driven by Miss Falconer. Each child had a buddy as we walked down to the beach, where we then discussed beach rules and boundaries.

Some children used the spades to dig for treasure and were delighted to find some beautiful oyster shells. Others had great fun running along the sandy beach.

We enjoyed a lovely snack of hot chocolate to keep us warm. Before venturing back to the minibus, we made our way to the water for a splash and further exploration.

This environment offers its own set of learning opportunities and potential for discovery. The children and staff are looking forward to future trips to the beach, to extend open-ended outdoor learning.
