‘St George's girls deliver Stellar Performance at the National Level in 2019 Scottish Schools Badminton Union (SSBU) Competitions’
Following on from her primary championship success last year, Vibha (Lower 4) won the Under 14 Scottish Schools Badminton Union Secondary Championship played March 9-10, 2019 at Perth, beating Brooke Stalker (Under 15 National Champion) in the finals with a score of 21-13,17-21,21,14. Throughout the weekend Vibha played some fantastic badminton and her consistency improved as she progressed through the rounds, quarters and semi-finals without losing a set. Maithili (Lower 5), having won the Edinburgh regionals, competed in the Under 17 singles, reaching the quarterfinals, before losing a tough three set match.
Vibha and Maithili then joined forces to represent St George's at the Intermediate Secondary (Under 17 level) doubles, a few years above their age group and played some high-quality badminton to reach the finals. They played an outstanding game of badminton in the finals, winning the first set 21-19. However, the more experienced pair from East Lothian were stronger on the day, with our girls eventually losing the final two sets with a score of 10-21, 12-21. A credible runners-up finish.
Deepti (Primary 6) meanwhile competed in the Primary Qualifiers for the Edinburgh region on March 9 and came top of the singles event, overcoming a tough challenge in the semi-finals against an older opponent from Bruntsfield, 21-19 before beating the other finalist 21-7 in the finals. This earns her a place in the National Primary SSBU finals to be held in Perth on May 4, 2019. Well done to the girls and good luck to Deepti for the Primary finals.
