Blogs and News - St George's School For Girls, Edinburgh
We were delighted to have a games afternoon of hockey fixtures with St Mary’s Melrose on Wednesday 20 March. This is our first set of fixtures with St Mary’s Melrose in 27 years!
Two Lower 4 teams, two Remove teams and two Primary 6 teams all had some great match play across the board and enjoyed the social side of the fixture as much as being on the pitch!
The 1st VII hockey girls played in the High School of Glasgow 7s tournament on the 13th of March. The girls got off to a good start in the group stages where they got two wins against St Columba's and Glasgow Academy. The final game in the group was against George Heriot's School where St George's narrowly lost, which put our girls through to the plate. After lots of pressure and good build up play against High School of Glasgow 'B' team in the semi-final, St George's managed to get the ball in the back of the net and progress through to the final. St George's played St Aloysius College in the plate final and went up a goal in the early stages of the match, with lots of good defending towards the end the girls were able to maintain their lead to bring home the plate. Well done!
On Saturday 9 March a Remove Hockey team took part in the George Watson's College Primary 7 tournament at Peffermill playing fields. The girls started with tough games against High School of Dundee and George Heriot's School and despite performing well, lost by a narrow margin. The final group game was against George Watson's 'B'. St George's dominated the game but were unable to score, resulting in a 0-0 draw. The team progressed to the bowl semi-final to play Hutcheson's Grammar. Another 0-0 followed, before St George's produced a fine performance in running penalties to advance to the final. The final was against George Watson's 'A' and the team produced a great battling performance but were unlucky to concede in the last minute to lose 1-0. Well done to all the girls involved.
The Primary 6 hockey has gone from strength to strength this year, show there is real potential for this year group going forward. The development of skills and tactical understanding saw all teams produce some great performances with strong wins against The Mary Erskine School and High School of Dundee. This strong year culminated in Primary 6 hockey team selected for the The Mary Erskine tournament coming away with a strong second place losing narrowly to George Watson’s College in the final.
Georgie (Upper 5) has had a fantastic hockey season. She played in the Scottish Hockey Futures cup in August, the Under 16 East District team and just this week she was selected to be in the Scotland Under 16 National squad which means she will be going to Wales in the Easter holidays to win her first cap. Well done!
Congratulations to Kate (Upper 4) who has been selected for the Under 14 East District Hockey Squad.
