Blogs and News - St George's School, Edinburgh
On Tuesday 8th of February, the whole of Lower School had a full day conference which coincided with Safer Internet Day. It was a great way to understand in more depth how you should behave on social media and the internet, and how to interact better with other users online.
In the morning, Mr Barrett was talking to us about body image and how much of their lives people show online. This was very insightful because it made us think about how people’s lives seem amazing online, but they don’t tend to show you the less exciting side of their lives. Following that we had a talk from Mr Fowles about screen time. We spoke about how much time people spend on their screens and how this compared with what is recommended. He showed us all sorts of ways to track our usage. Next, we had Mr Maciver and Mrs MacKinnon who talked to us about online relationships and bullying. They taught us some text etiquette (how to text properly) and they had us make beautiful posters on tips for texting. Mr Leask talked to us about password safety and helped us update our security/privacy settings. It was extremely useful.
At the end of the day, we listened to a virtual conference on Internet safety. We did a small quiz in our houses which was a very fun way to finish off the day. We all learnt a lot about how to keep safe on the internet and what to do and what not to do online. Overall, it was a very fun day.
