Swimming report from Mhairi (U6) on her experience at the Scottish National Age Group Championships
At the end of last term I competed at the Scottish National Age Group Championships, in Aberdeen. This competition has around 800+ athletes coming from all around Scotland to compete, and the age categories range from 12 - 19 and over. I was competing in the 17/18 age group. I competed in eight events and made the final in all eight. I was in the top five in 4 out of 8 of my events and I came third in the 200IM with a 3-second PB, which I was so happy with! Along with competing in individual events, I competed in the three relays (4x100IM, 4x100Free and 4x200Free) alongside my teammates from Warrender Baths. The relay events we competed in were 17 and over, so we knew it was going to be difficult to medal as there were 20+ year olds competing in the same race. We managed to come third in the 4x100IM and 4x100Free and 4th in the 4x200Free, managing to book our places to compete in these three relays at the British Summer Championships held in Sheffield in late July. I am hoping to be competing at these championships in individual events too, and to do so you need to be in the top 24 in Britain for that event within a certain period; this window to post times is not over yet and closes in late May. As a club, Warrender managed to win the Top Club points, by over 200 points, which is huge. I am so proud to be part of this swim team and to have helped them achieve this title.
At the same competition, Flora (L5) also performed particularly well. She qualified for nine events and swam well in all of them. Flora placed in the top ten in five of the events in the Girls 15 year old category:
- 200m freestyle: 10th place
- 400 IM: 7th place
- 800 freestyle: 7th place
- 200m butterfly: 6th place
- 1500m freestyle: 3rd place (Bronze medal)
She placed just outside the top 10 swimmers in two other events (200m IM 12th and 400m freestlye 13th) so overall it was a very successful event for her and her first ever Scottish Nationals medal!
Well done Flora and Mhairi, some super results!
