Primary 4 Antonine Guard Visit

Romans 250wOn Thursday 11 May, Primary 4 girls dressed up as Roman soldiers.  A man came from the Antonine Guard to talk about the Roman army. He was dressed as a centurion with a helmet with a feathered crest. He showed us different things that you can do with a Roman shield. The Roman shield is red for Mars the God of war. The Romans were very successful at lots of things like building forts and they were very clever. He told us about the different Roman Emperors who came to Britain. The Romans stayed in Britain for about 400 years… nearly 2000 years ago!

He later sent this letter:

Dear Soldiers of Rome,

Thank you for making my time with you so enjoyable. Traffic is a modern problem which made my arrival a little late.

Your costumes and behaviour were first class and I send a special thanks to the young lady who stood bravely for our workshop as her costume did not allow her to sit down. Good training for the Roman army!

I hope you will remember something of the Roman Legions and the great Emperors.

Best wishes

Gaius Julius

P.S. Thanks also for the wonderful tea and biscuits which are the mainstay of Rome!
