The YDL (Youth Development League) is probably the highest standard of athletics competition for children in the UK. It hosts all athletic events from high jump to 1500m. Most athletes who compete for Great Britain in the Olympics and Commonwealth Games have competed in the YDL as junior athletes. This season, my athletics club, Edinburgh AC, managed to qualify for the final, which will be held in Birmingham. This in itself is an achievement, as we had to compete against all the top clubs in Scotland.
The team manager then has to select a team to compete and this is based on performance during the season. It has been pretty nerve racking waiting to see who has been selected, but luckily both Anise and I made the team. Each athlete can compete in a maximum of three events. I have been selected to compete in the high jump, long jump and javelin, and Anise has been selected to compete in the 800m and relay. Edinburgh Athletics have won the UK final a few times, most recently in 2015 when my older brothers were part of the team, so no pressure!
